| What is an Osteopath, or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.)?
An Osteopath is a fully licensed physician who is trained to see the body as a whole and also learns to treat in a hands-on manner. This type of work is called osteopathic manipulative medicine. Some Osteopaths specialize in manipulative medicine and a smaller percentage have a sub-specialty in the subtle form of treatment called Cranial Osteopathy (also known as Osteopathy in the Cranial Field). Some people refer to this as Cranio-Sacral Therapy.
The principals of osteopathic medicine are:
- The body is a whole, representing a combination of body, mind and spirit.
- The body’s structure and function are inter-related.
- The body has the innate ability to heal itself.
